WORM has co-produced a series of sound pieces for an audio installation at the Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam. The first three soundpieces are released by WORM as 12-inch on vinyl. I teamed up with Nick to create a generative design concept. This idea finally twisted into a process that involved feedback loops and mangling digital images, mimicking the processes these musicians use for their pieces.

First we built a scanner (Arduino) that is able to scan 1 pixel. We thought to then start scanning stuff by hand, but this resulted in meaningless data. So we wrote a program in Processing that ‘reads’ a digital image pixel by pixel, and sends it out onto a specific area on a monitor.

This area is continually scanned by our pixel scanner, and the scanned pixel is placed back onto a grid. This way an image immerged with certain errors, like color interpretations of the scanner, and a delay caused by the monitor.

Interestingly, we used black and white ‘source’ images, the colors that came out were actually produced by the scanner, and were further enhanced in photoshop.

Visual identity for the Hotglue.me website/cms.
Hotglue provides a new way of building websites, which can be described as an in-the-browser CMS application.

You can create an account (site) at Hotglue.me, login and immediately add images, texts, etc. directly in your browser window. So no html, databases or further ftp-installments are necessary. Making this the ideal tool for kids, newbies or designers that don’t like/know coding.

Because working with Hotglue has a collage feel, opposed to a restricted template feel, I decided to create a visual identity that complemented this. Using old scrapbook pictures from the good ole’ days, hobby DIY books, little chemist boxes etc. It also reflects on just having fun on the web again, no heavy techie stuff.

Hotglue is a project by Moddr_lab (WORM).

Theatergroep Siberia returned to Buro Duplex for a special little web project to supplement one of their theatre plays. The play ‘Vloek’ is based upon the Greek tragedy ‘Elektra’, and is written by Floris van Delft and Wolter Muller. They also made the succesful play ‘Krijg nou Titus! (Gouden Krekel nomination) in 2009.

The www.vloek.nu site is a part of the educational program of Theatergroep Siberia. The site is designed as if the visitor is given access to ‘leaked’ police-files. Youngsters that visit the play are confronted beforehand to judge what is ‘true’ or what is ‘truth’. However, they initially get only one point of view, from one character in the play. It’s only in the play itself when all the characters stories are revealed.

For this project I did visual design and interaction design.

Cinerama, a cinema in the heart of Rotterdam, still breathes the ‘old’ 60ties movie experience, so we wanted to show this in the website. The aim was for the homepage to become like a dynamically rendered movieposter.

The programme is featured in different colors; premieres are red, kids movies are blue, special features are green and expected movies are ocre. The regular programme is black and white. The homepage ‘knows’ when you enter the site, and shows the first 8 movies that will be on show. Thus creating a unique front page (with different color-scemes) every 2 hours or so. On the left it shows the movie-week (thursday to thursday). All movies are listed per day. As the week progresses less days are featured.

Nick Koning also worked his magic creating a custom backend for this website.
